Tetris, the world’s most iconic puzzle game, continues to unite and inspire fans across generations as the globe celebrates World Tetris Day.

Since its creation in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris has become a global cultural phenomenon, with over 520 million units sold and a legacy that shows no signs of slowing down. In celebration, I moderated a fireside chat yesterday with Henk Rogers, the man who brought Tetris to the world, in Los Angeles at our GamesBeat Engage event with Xsolla.

“After more than four decades, the magic of Tetris still lies in its elegant simplicity. It is easy to learn, endlessly challenging, and universally loved,” said Maya Rogers, CEO of Tetris, in a statement. “As we look to the future, we’re focused on evolving the brand in unexpected and exciting ways, from bold collaborations to new platforms and formats. At the heart of it all is our passionate global community, whose love for the game inspires us to push the boundaries of what Tetris can be.”

In 2025, The Tetris Company is building on last year’s momentum with a lineup of announcements, creative collaborations, and immersive experiences that reflect the spirit of Tetris. The brand remains committed to innovation while honoring the timeless gameplay that has made it a global classic.

The iconic puzzle game is reaching new heights with the launch of Red Bull Tetris, a global tournament open to players 18 and older of all skill levels. Global qualifiers are now live here. Featuring fresh twists on classic gameplay, Red Bull Tetris introduces fast-paced rounds, strategic power-ups, and the unique Golden Tetrimino.

Top-scoring players will advance to their National Finals, competing in-person in 1v1 PC matches for the chance to represent their country at the World Final in Dubai. From December 11–13, 2025, finalists will battle for the top spot, culminating in a historic final game on December 13, played live in the sky with more than 2,000 synchronized drones in the first-ever official live, playable Tetris game in the air.

This year’s competition brings together top Tetris talent from around the globe, including defending champion Alex “Alex T” Thach and rising star Willis “Blue Scuti” Gibson. The Tetris Company founder, Henk Rogers, will make a special appearance on the morning of June 7 to greet the competitors and kick off the momentous event.

The classic Tetris community will also be in the spotlight at the world premiere of Blue Scuti: Tetris Crasher on June 11 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Directed by Emmy-nominated documentarian Chris Moukarbel (Gaga: Five Foot Two, Banksy Does New York, Cypher), the inaugural documentary from Legendary Entertainment’s Unscripted division chronicles thirteen-year-old Willis Gibson’s extraordinary story of becoming the first human in history to reach the Tetris killscreen.
