Wormhole announces the deprecation of support for several blockchain networks by summer 2025, impacting Terra, Oasis, Acala, and others, while transitioning some Cosmos chains to community support.

Wormhole, a prominent cross-chain messaging platform, has announced significant changes to its supported network infrastructure. According to the Wormhole blog, several blockchain networks will face full deprecation starting in the summer of 2025. Additionally, some Cosmos chains will transition to community-supported frontends and relaying services.

Affected Networks

The Guardian Network, which oversees the security and sustainability of Wormhole’s operations, has decided to cease support for certain networks. This decision comes after a thorough review of network metrics such as transaction volumes and resource utilization.

The networks slated for full deprecation include Terra, Terra2, Oasis, Aurora, Acala, Karura, and Xpla. As part of the transition, Wormhole will disconnect the full nodes of these chains from its platform, effectively halting outgoing messages and token transfers. However, incoming transfers will remain feasible as long as a majority of Guardians continue to support them.

Transition for Cosmos Chains

In addition to the full deprecation, select Cosmos chains, including Injective, Osmosis, Evmos, and Kujira, will transition to community-supported frontends. This means that Wormhole will discontinue its subsidized IBC relaying, and Portal, Wormhole’s token transfer interface, will no longer host a frontend for these chains.

The existing IBC connections will remain whitelisted, allowing any interested parties to set up their own frontends and IBC relaying solutions to maintain token transfers for these chains.

Implementation Timeline

The deprecation process will be implemented over two phases. First, the Guardian Network will disconnect the affected chains’ nodes, followed by the delisting of these chains from the Portal frontend. These changes are scheduled to take effect in the summer of 2025, ensuring no disruption before this period.

Support and Resources

Wormhole encourages developers to leverage the Wormhole Connect frontend widget and the @certusone/wormhole-sdk for setting up their own solutions. For those interested in IBC relaying, service providers like CryptoCrew Validators can assist with the necessary infrastructure.
